GTM Engineer Salary Guide: How Much Do GTM Engineers Make?

Apex Inc.

Apex Inc.

In US job posts, GTM engineers earn a median posted salary between $127,500 (Bloomberry) and $150,000 (RevGuild). Self-reported total pay runs higher: Levels.fyi shows a $140,000 median, and Glassdoor shows a $191,881 average. Senior and lead roles at AI companies post base pay above $200,000.

This guide is a data roundup for people weighing the role, and it pairs with the guide on how to become a GTM engineer. Every number names its source, and the guide is refreshed quarterly.

Key points

  • Job post data puts the US median salary between $127,500 and $150,000, depending on the source and date window.

  • Self-reported total pay on Levels.fyi and Glassdoor runs higher because it adds bonus and stock to base.

  • Level moves pay most: RevGuild's medians climb from $113,000 at entry level to $225,000 for leaders.

  • Location matters: RevGuild's New York median ($170,000) is $55,000 above its North Carolina median ($115,000).

  • Contract rates split hard, from a $28 hourly freelance average in Clay Community data to $150 to $300 an hour for experienced consultants in Betts Recruiting's data.

What do the public salary sources say?

Seven public sources publish GTM engineer pay, and their headline figures run from a $106,000 global average to a $191,881 US average. The spread comes from what each one measures, not from errors.

If you only remember one row, use RevGuild's: it states its sample and covers June 2025 to June 2026.

Why do the sources disagree so much?

Because they measure different things. Base salary, total pay, US only and worldwide data will never land on the same number.

The five biggest reasons:

  1. Base versus total pay. RevGuild says its figure is "not OTE or total comp." Levels.fyi and Glassdoor report total pay, which adds bonus and stock.

  2. Job posts versus self-reports. Posted ranges show what companies plan to pay. Self-reports show what people say they earn, and small samples swing with a few high earners.

  3. Geography. The Clay Community analysis covers postings worldwide, with only 26% in the US. That pulls its $106,000 average below every US-only figure.

  4. Sample size. Levels.fyi has 24 data points and Glassdoor has 31. One senior offer at an AI lab can move either median by thousands.

  5. Timing. South cites a Levels.fyi median of $132,000. The same Levels.fyi page now shows $140,000. A role this new reprices every few months.

Pay disclosure itself is thin. RevGuild found that only 23.4% of its 303-posting pool listed pay. Treat every figure here as a range to test, not a fixed rate.

How much do GTM engineers make by level?

Level is the biggest single driver. RevGuild's medians nearly double from entry level to leader, and South's ranges show the same climb.

Level

RevGuild median (job posts)

South US range (benchmark)

Entry or junior

$113,000

$90,000 to $120,000

Mid-level

$150,000

$120,000 to $160,000

Senior

$188,000

$150,000 to $190,000

Leader, lead or founding

$225,000

$170,000 to $210,000+

The two sources agree at mid-level and drift apart at the top. RevGuild's leader median sits above South's lead range, likely because RevGuild draws on disclosed posts that skew toward well-funded companies.

The Clay Community analysis frames level as a skill split rather than a title. It puts "tool operators" at $60,000 to $90,000 and "system architects" at $100,000 to $160,000. The gap is the useful part: building systems pays more than running tools.

If you are mapping which skills move you up a band, the GTM engineer skills matrix lays them out level by level.

How does company type change GTM engineer pay?

AI companies pay the most, and none of the public sources break pay down by funding stage. The clearest signal comes from named companies and company type.

Bloomberry's list of top payers is led by Vercel at $252,000 and OpenAI at $250,000, and also includes Ramp at $184,000 and Clay at $175,000. RevGuild's disclosed roles include Squint at $190,000 and Baseten at $187,500.

Betts Recruiting puts typical GTM engineer base pay at AI companies at $180,000 to $240,000, with on-target earnings of $230,000 to $310,000 and 25% to 30% of that as variable pay.

What this looks like by company type:

  • AI-native companies. The top of the market, per Betts and Bloomberry. Expect harder technical interviews to match.

  • Founding or first GTM engineer hires. South puts the founding or lead hiring budget at $170,000 to $210,000+, and cites one founding opening with a bonus of up to 40%.

  • Specialized variants. South lists AI GTM engineers at $140,000 to $200,000+ and forward-deployed GTM engineers at $130,000 to $190,000. The forward deployed engineer guide covers how that role differs.

Where the title sits relative to similar jobs is covered in GTM engineer vs RevOps vs sales ops. South's own adjacent figures put RevOps managers at $100,000 to $160,000.

How does location affect GTM engineer salaries?

Coastal tech hubs pay the most, and the gap between the top and bottom US states is about $55,000 in RevGuild's data.

RevGuild's state medians for its top 10 states by coverage:

State

Median base

New York

$170,000

California

$165,000

Massachusetts

$160,000

Washington

$159,000

Colorado

$140,000

Texas

$130,000

Georgia

$130,000

Illinois

$125,000

Florida

$120,000

North Carolina

$115,000

RevGuild notes that its level and state cuts are separate lookups, so do not stack them into a "senior in New York" number.

Betts Recruiting gives city ranges: $180,000 to $300,000 in San Francisco and $130,000 to $230,000 in New York.

Outside the US, South puts the average Latin America GTM engineer at $61,800 a year, against $132,000 in the US. If you are hiring across borders, that 53% gap is the headline.

What about bonus, OTE and equity?

Bonus data is thin and equity data is thinner: no public source puts a dollar value on GTM engineer stock grants.

What the sources do show:

  • Bonus. South puts typical bonuses at 5% to 20% of base salary.

  • OTE at AI companies. Betts gives $230,000 to $310,000, with 25% to 30% variable.

  • Additional pay. Glassdoor shows an additional pay range of $48,000 to $90,000 on top of base, from 31 submissions.

  • Equity in job posts. South lists an Attentive opening at $140,000 to $175,000 "plus equity and benefits," with no grant size.

  • Total comp spread. Levels.fyi reports total compensation, and its 75th percentile ($249,000) sits $109,000 above its median.

That last gap is where equity tends to show up. When an offer includes stock, ask for the number of shares, the latest preferred price or 409A value, and the vesting schedule, so you can put your own dollar figure on it.

What do contract and freelance GTM engineers charge?

Rates split into two markets. The Clay Community analysis shows a $28 an hour average for freelance postings, while Betts Recruiting puts independent consultants with 5+ years of experience at $150 to $300 an hour.

Many freelance postings ask for list building and enrichment tasks. Consultant rates pay for someone who designs the system and owns the result.

Neither source publishes fractional retainer figures, so any monthly number is a calculation. As an illustrative example with round numbers: 20 hours a month at $150 an hour comes to $3,000 a month, and the same hours at $300 come to $6,000.

If you are on the buying side, hiring a fractional AI engineer covers scoping the work, and performance-based AI consulting pricing covers tying fees to results instead of hours.

Who popularized the GTM engineer title, and does it affect pay?

Clay is most often credited. Clay's own team wrote that it "began calling them GTM engineers" in its post on Clay's GTM engineering lab, and RevGuild notes that Clay's guide to GTM engineering is "widely credited with popularizing the term."

It matters for pay because Clay skill shows up in job requirements. Bloomberry found Clay in "90%+ of profiles" among the 100 GTM engineer LinkedIn profiles it reviewed. The explainer on what a GTM engineer is covers the role itself.

Pay is moving from output to decisions. The more of your value sits in judgment, such as constraint design and checkpoint placement, the stronger your negotiating position.

How do you negotiate a GTM engineer salary?

Anchor on job post data for base pay, then negotiate total pay in writing. Ranges are wide enough that preparation moves real money.

A negotiation checklist:

  1. Pick your benchmark. Use RevGuild's level median closest to the role's scope, not its title. "Senior" means different things at a 20-person startup and a public company.

  2. Adjust for location. Check RevGuild's state median if the company pays by location. Ask directly whether pay bands differ for remote hires.

  3. Separate base from variable. Ask what share is base, what is bonus or OTE, and what the bonus paid out last year.

  4. Price the equity yourself. Ask for share count, strike or preferred price and vesting. Value it at a discount you are comfortable with.

  5. Bring proof of systems work. The Clay Community data shows architects out-earning operators. Show workflows you designed, what they replaced and the hours they saved.

  6. Ask for the band. Many companies will share the posted range for the level. Ask where in it the offer sits and why.

  7. Trade, do not just ask. If base is fixed, ask for a sign-on bonus, a review at six months or a tooling and learning budget.

Interview performance sets the level you are offered, which matters more than any single counteroffer. The GTM engineer interview audit covers preparing for the technical rounds.

Three assets make a GTM engineer easier to pay well: a credential, a published framework and a documented AI implementation.

What are the common mistakes when reading GTM engineer salary data?

The most common mistake is comparing a base salary from one source with a total pay figure from another. Most of the rest come from treating a small sample as the market.

  1. Mixing base and total pay. RevGuild's $150,000 base and Glassdoor's $191,881 total are not a $41,881 disagreement.

  2. Trusting a tiny sample. Two dozen self-reports can be moved by one AI lab offer.

  3. Using a global average for a US role. The Clay Community $106,000 figure includes India, Germany and the UK.

  4. Stacking level and state cuts. RevGuild warns against combining them.

  5. Anchoring on the top payers. Vercel and OpenAI figures describe the top of the market, not the middle.

  6. Comparing freelance and consulting rates. A $28 task rate and a $300 consulting rate are different jobs.

  7. Using stale numbers. A median from last year can be thousands of dollars behind, as the Levels.fyi move from $132,000 to $140,000 shows.

How is this guide kept up to date?

This guide is refreshed every quarter, and the "Last updated" date at the top changes each time.

Each refresh follows the same steps:

  1. Recheck every source in the table and replace any figure that has changed, with its new date.

  2. Add new public reports that state their sample and method, and drop any source that moves behind a login.

  3. Pull fresh public job posts with listed ranges from companies hiring for the title.

  4. Keep the rules. Every number names its source, base and total pay stay labeled, and any gap between sources stays visible instead of being averaged away.
